George Emil Palade School is a primary and secondary school, founded during the Comunist regime and it is situated in the western part of Ploiesti, in an ever changing and socially heterogeneous neighbourhood, whose population, beginning with the early 90s, has been frequently confronted with such issues as unemployment and financial shortage. Since 2000 this school has had the status of an inclusive centre, which means the institution has taken necessary measures in order to support parents, but mostly students with physical disabilities or with learning, concentration or social integration problems (ADHD, dyslexia, autism). There is a special teacher who works with students with such studying difficulties, slow learning rhythm and serious lags (remedial work). There are also cases – even though they do not form the majority – in which the children are raised by one parent only or by grandparents, due to labour migration towards other countries.

In our school there are almost 1000 pupils, 30 % who commute from the nearby villages, some come from the Humanitarian Organisation “Concordia”, which is an orphanage , a few Romani students and a few with learning difficulties and some with physical disabilities. There are 57 teachers working in the school, 6 kindergarten teachers, 32 teachers of various subjects and 19 primary teachers. The school supports parents with inflexible working schedules, by means of organizing an after-school programme for primary school students.

Moreover, it is worth mentioning that the school offers the students the opportunity to study some of the most required foreign languages, namely English and French, as well as Spanish until recently.

Our school carried out, as a coordinating institution, a Comenius partnership “Let’s Eurobrate!” (LLP), during which the school staff gained a lot of experience in the area of managing and coordinating trans-national activities and common tasks, involving deadlines, various resources. Most of them have more than 10 years of experience in teaching and were involved in the previous Comenius project run in our school, therefore they are equipped with intercultural and linguistic competences required for taking part in such international activities. The contact person for this project has been the coordinator of 2 Comenius projects therefore she has organizational and communicational skills necessary for managing international projects. At the same time, she is the school Staff professional Manager, guiding her colleagues in their careers’ development, finding, advertising and helping the staff with selecting the appropriate training courses.

All teachers of English and one primary teacher have participated in training courses abroad, in the UE for the past 10 years. One primary teacher has been running Etwinning projects for years and she’s become our school expert on that platform.

The school has 2 ICT labs and 2 teachers who can deal with technological issues and many more teachers that are able to work with their students on the internet. We also have a website:

The school also has a small library and a dedicated librarian that can organize activities with students from primary and secondary level. Our school also takes part permanently in a lot of projects involving the local community- strategic institutions (Police, Town Hall, Law Court etc.) in order to carry out activities meant to prevent violence, improper behaviour, early school leaving, ineffective communication with parents and students, corruption and other such unwanted aspects.

Lastly, the school management is open minded and supports all projects that are beneficial for target groups (students and teachers alike) and also would like to develop and improve the relationship with local community (mostly with parents).
